Dunk Island and Bedarra are delighted to announce their sponsorship of the inaugural Mission Beach Film Festival (MBFF), a world-first sustainable film festival to be held in a tropical setting.
Both Dunk Island and Bedarra are now under new ownership. Newly appointed CEO, Mr. Darren Cann, is particularly excited about the MBFF because the festival marks the beginning of a close working relationship with the local community. MBFF is the first of many community and environmental initiatives the Group intends to be involved with.
Dunk Island will be showing four films over three days in an outdoor cinema within the grounds of this magnificent tropical island.
Within the world heritage surrounds of Mission Beach in Tropical North Queensland, MBFF is firmly dedicated to the theme of sustainability. The ‘green theme’ will carry through all aspects of the community-focused festival, from programming to operations.
MBFF will purchase carbon credits to fully offset its carbon footprint, and will conduct a re-vegetation project involving the planting of 1000 trees.
Dunk Island and Bedarra, which were acquired by Pamoja Capital on 21st September 2009, supports the sustainable theme. Cann says, “The Mission Beach Film Festival is an ideal fit for the Islands. The sustainability focus of the program aligns perfectly with the environmental sensibilities of the McCall MacBain foundation.”
The MBFF program will present films that celebrate the natural world, and inspire viewers with the unique stories of remarkable people and places. The Festival will be held at numerous venues on the mainland, as well as running an ‘island program’ on Dunk Island.
“This is an exciting new initiative for Dunk Island,” says Cann, “as it is the first time we have set up an outdoor movie facility on the island. It provides yet another activity for our guests to enjoy, while supporting and extending the reach of the Festival.”

Big River Man (M)
The story of Martin Strel, an endurance swimmer from Slovenia who swims rivers of the world: the Mississippi, the Danube, and the Yangtze to date – to highlight pollution in the world. In his fifties and rather overweight, his treacherous journey brings him face to face with many obstacles, including water predators, rapids, and toxic pollution. Big River Man is a psychological thrill ride that works as both a humorous character study and an enlightening environmental message; it has to be seen to be believed.

The Age of Stupid (M)
The new cinema documentary from the Director of 'McLibel' and the Producer of the Oscar-winning 'One Day in September', this enormously ambitious drama-documentary-animation hybrid stars Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching 'archive' footage from 2008 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change while we had the chance.

The Cove (M)
Using state-of-the-art equipment like night vision HD cameras camouflaged in fake rocks and shrubs, a group of activists, led by renowned dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry of Flipper TV series fame, infiltrate a cove near Taijii, Japan to expose the shocking instance of perennial dolphin slaughter and the serious threat to human health with the toxic meat sold around the country labeled 'whale meat'.
This special indoor Sunday afternoon session is being shown as an expression of gratitude to Mission Beach Film Festival volunteers.
“The volunteers have donated much of their time to the Mission Beach Film Festival and as a gesture of our appreciation, Dunk Island is conducting this special complimentary screening of ‘The Cove’, all volunteer’s friends and family are welcome to attend.”
Dunk Island sessions are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 15.
